The Author: Alessandro Patanè

Welcome. My name is Alessandro Patanè and I am the founder and lead developer of the PataOS project. Born in Catania in 1976 and currently based in Berlin, I have dedicated my career to the pursuit of maximum efficiency, stability, and precision, both in the world of physical design and software engineering.

From a CAD Background on Windows to the Linux Ecosystem

My professional background is rooted in structural design and architecture. Working for years as a surveyor and CAD designer for various engineering firms, I gained profound experience with complex software ecosystems in a Windows environment, working with industry standards such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Solid Edge, FP Pro, and Autodesk Map 3D. In that sector, I forged my "design mentality": the awareness that every complex infrastructure requires unshakable foundations and uncompromising reliability.

However, the need for total and transparent control over my machine drove me to migrate to the Linux environment. Today, my entire workflow relies on top-tier native Linux software: I use FreeCAD for parametric design, Blender for 3D modeling and rendering, KiCad for electronics, and DaVinci Resolve for professional video editing.

Programming and Projects in Development (PatCADME)

This transition led me to rigorously explore operating system architecture and code development. Currently, I study and use structured languages such as Python, C++, and Java. Right on my current laptop, equipped with Debian 13, I am actively developing PatCADME: a personal project of mine (currently in the development and testing phase) designed to provide a new interface and advanced tools for CAD, CAM, and CAE workflows.

The Genesis and Mission of PataOS

PataOS is the natural synthesis of this entire journey. Working daily on heavy calculations, code compilation, and design on my Debian system, I grew tired of the logic behind commercial operating systems: hidden telemetry, unrequested processes, and invasive updates.

I needed a custom digital workstation that was a direct extension of my design mindset. I built PataOS starting from the most solid core in the world, Debian 13, combining it with the Cinnamon desktop environment to have a clean, productive, and distraction-free interface. Today, I share this ecosystem to offer developers, engineers, designers, and creatives a free, stable, and independent tool. An operating system where maximum performance and absolute respect for privacy are the only true priorities.
